Citing concerns about the film's portrayal of the Gujarat riots of 2002, BJP leader VV Vijeesh had asked for a ban on its screening. The film starred Mohanlal.
On Tuesday, April 1, the Kerala High Court declined to halt the release of the highly anticipated Malayalam movie L2: Empuraan, which starred Mohanlal and opened in theaters on March 27. VV Vijeesh, a BJP leader, had petitioned for the film to be banned due to its portrayal of the Gujarat riots of 2002, but the court rejected his request. While refusing temporary relief, Justice CS Dias referred to the plea as a "publicity interest litigation" and questioned the petitioner's motivations.
"Did the censor board not certify it? According to the statute, the censor board must certify the film before it may be released. It is now available. What is the next point of contention being brought up? It is not necessary for you to promote such things. I have doubts about your sincerity. According to LiveLaw, the court had said verbally, "All publicity-oriented litigation."
The BJP leader was also challenged by the court if he could provide any examples of violent situations brought on by the movie, which had been showing in theaters for about a week. The government pleader responded by telling the court that there were no cases filed that showed the film was causing any law-and-order issues.
Additionally, the government maintained that a film is assumed suitable for screening once it has been certified by statutory authorities. This reasoning was accepted by the court, which declined to provide any immediate remedy, instead announcing that the case will be heard after the summer break.
L2: Prithviraj Sukumaran's film Empuraan has been controversial due to its portrayal of some right-wing groups and its purported allusions to the Godhra riots of 2002. The directors have denied any malice, despite critics' claims that the movie presents important investigating agencies in a negative light. The film's voluntary cuts, which are anticipated to be used in screenings this week, were agreed upon by the filmmakers in response to the criticism. Additionally, Mohanlal assured them in a public declaration that "controversial subjects would be removed from the film."
