The New Guidelines from TRAI to Prevent Spam Calls: Prompt Response to Scammers
The New Rules for TRAI: India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has started to take action against scammers and spammers. Under the updated Telecom Commercial Communications Consumer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) 2018, TRAI has tightened regulations in response to an increase in complaints. The goal of the new rules is to protect consumers against unsolicited commercial messages. The Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development confirmed the new regulations in the Lok Sabha today after they were made public on February 12, 2025.
The New Anti-Spam Regulations of TRAI
Users now have more options when it comes to reporting spam calls and messages, thanks to the updated regulations. Users now have up to seven days to report such difficulties, whereas before they had to do so within three days.
Additionally, enforcement actions against spammers will happen much more quickly. The 30-day period that telecom providers had previously had to take action against telemarketers has been reduced to five days. The complaint procedure has also been tightened; formerly, only ten complaints in seven days would result in action. In order to expedite the war on spam operations, enforcement action will now be taken in response to even five complaints within ten days.
When Will the New Regulations Take Effect?
According to the Minister of State, the new regulations will take effect within 30 days of their publication in the official gazette. However, after 60 days, some provisions will take effect. Even before these changes, on August 13, 2024, TRAI had directed telecom providers to cut off the resources used by unauthorized telemarketers. Spam mails have previously been shown to be significantly reduced by this command.
Effects of TRAI's Measure
In January 2025, spam complaints clearly declined from August 2024. There were approximately 1,84,419 complaints about spam calls and mails between August 2024 and January 2025; by January 2025, that number had dropped to 1,34,821. Over 18.8 lakh telecom resources linked to the fraudulent communications have been taken down, and TRAI has blacklisted over 1,150 spamming companies and individuals.
